“The King of Cool." Some Have it, Some Don't

Everyone knows the saying, “Life imitates arts.” So if you’ve noticed in some of the recent fashion magazines such as GQ, Details and Esquire to name a few, you will realize the resurgence of the “The King of Cool” the one and only Steve McQueen.

There is also the phrase; “Imitation is the best form of flattery.” What better way to pay tribute to one of the most iconic stars who ever lived than to model his style and persona in the clothes we wear this Fall and Winter.

If you thumb through the pages of these magazines you will see the likeness of Steve McQueen’s classic photos. Not just any photos, but photos that make you say to yourself, “I wish I could pull that off!” Frankly, he is too cool.

You will see his classic style of monochrome color turtlenecks, which are a hot commodity for this Fall and Winter Season.  It was unique in the way that he wore them.  Mostly with sports jackets or car/outer coats.  If I can add I think they also look very good with 2 or 3-piece suits from flannel and winter wool fabrics.  Not everyone can pull this off.  In fact, Richard Roundtree is also famous for rocking the turtleneck’s and long jackets.  Problem is, his movie and characters weren’t totally believable.

In the pages of these popular fashion magazines you will also see Steve McQueen’s classic framed sunglasses, his fast cars, one of which has been categorized as one of Hollywood’s Most Famous Cars -1968 Mustang GT500.  Ford has even used his likeness with the re-launch of the classic car.  There it is. In this 1-1/2 minute commercial. The sweater. The jacket. The cool of Steve McQueen.  To top it all off, he always had the leading lady every man wanted in his time. Ali McGraw, Faye Dunaway and the list goes on.  All the material trappings that exude success, was all wrapped up in him.

Although he was one of the 75 Best Dressed Men of All Time clothes alone do not make a man cool. So I asked a gentleman who remembered Steve McQueen when he was in his prime. “Why did you like Steve McQueen?” I asked. “Why was he so popular in the 60's and 70's?” The elder statesman glowed with enthusiasm as if he was reliving some great moment or event in his life. He stuck his chest out and with a straight face he said, “Steve McQueen was a "Man's Man.” After I finished laughing my tail off I asked, “What the heck does that mean?” He replied, “He’s a tough guy. In his movies he always played a ‘man's’ part. In other words, you wouldn’t catch Steve McQueen playing in a movie like Hitch. He just wouldn’t do it." The elder statesman also said, “He didn’t take any crap. The cops were always chasing him. There was a right way; the wrong way and then there was Steve McQueen’s way!” He explained.
The elder statesman was right too! By definition a Man’s Man is intelligent, courageous, persuasive, confidant and the object of women’s fantasies.

What I find interesting in all of this is Steve McQueen absolutely embodied the essence of success and cool in his day. What I also find in this business of styling great clients both near and far, there is one recurring theme; the appearance of success will always attract attention. There are no exceptions to this rule. Quite frankly, deep inside of every man’s heart is the desire and need to be successful. There is no denying it.  It doesn’t matter if you are an athlete, businessman, writer, entertainer or whatever, we all have a need to be successful. To what degree is another blog for another day.

In fact, we often gravitate to those that emulate our definitions and visions of success in our areas of expertise. And in most cases, we usually want to be the lone ranger, the guy that does it his way. The guy that goes against the system or the establishment. Funny thing is, Steve McQueen almost made you feel you could do it to.

Regardless of how you try, the bottom line is success attracts success. There is nowhere on earth you can go to escape from this fact. So my advice to you is to take the time to dress the part of success.  In closing, most of us couldn’t do the things Steve McQueen did, like drive fast cars, jump fences with motorcycle’s and get the hot girl. The least you could do is look like he did and just settle for being COOL!

Until next time…

Diamonds...A Great Gift for the Distinguished Gentleman

Perhaps men are not so easily seduced by jewelery, but they will certainly appreciate this tailor-made gem of a suit. For all the men out there who insist upon a “Rolls Royce” suit, Scabal has designed a cloth which incorporates diamond fragments. This new fabric range, which has been christened “Diamond Chip”, comes in a variety of patterns and colours.

Anyone who mentions luxury suits, automatically thinks of Scabal. Constantly striving for innovation, Scabal created in 2001 the first cloth containing diamond fragments, entitled “Diamond Chip”. This involved a great deal of research and development. After all, it was not Scabal's intention to design a museum piece, but instead to design a cloth that could be turned easily into a stylish and elegant suit.

The diamond chips are processed into the cloth as soon as the wool has been cleaned and combed. Microscopically small diamond fragments are then spread on the wool, and it is only then that the wool is spun. The result is a shiny thread to be woven into exceptional fabrics. The latter not only shine literally and figuratively, but they also feel comfortable and hang beautifully. Scabal never sacrifices comfort for the sake of beauty.

The cloth consists of a Super 150's wool (80 %) – into which diamond fragments have been processed – and pure silk (20 %). Once again, the cloth is being woven at Scabal's own weaving-mill in Huddersfield (UK).

The subtle grey, brown, and blue tints, the woven stripy patterns and the semi-plain patterns do perfect justice to the sparkling diamonds. Ideal for men who like celebrating in sheer luxury.

The “Diamond Chip” collection is available at Stitched Custom Clothing. The fabric is packaged as befits a true jewel, that is to say, in a luxury box with its own “Diamond Chip” fabric label. The quallity guarantee statement “Scabal – Super 150's – Silk with diamond fragments – made in England” is woven into the selvedge of the fabric. No Place Like Home...

There is no better place to trend spot than NYC...

Regardless of the store, the overall feel was elegant sophistication with a lack of fussiness.

At Zegna, suits definitely dominated the landscape... clean and simple...no ticket pockets or pic stitching. Trim silhouettes with slightly wider lapels... the shoulder is a soft natural look with a pagoda style expression. The trousers were clean flat fronts with 3/8" loops with 1 3/4" cuffs.

Elegant textured shirtings were featured with wide spreads. Also prominent were tight stripes in bold colors..

Many Sport Coats were featured with open patch pockets with a heavy emphasis on layering.

The neckwear was decidedly subtle across the board allowing the suit or jacket to make the statement.

The trends in Outerwear were the most exciting. Double-breasted pea coats were everywhere paired with jeans as well as car coats. Dressier Top Coats are all shown worn above the knee. The coat above features an inverted pleat on an open patch pocket.

Let these become the foundation for your styling this Fall/Winter season.

Ermenegildo Zegna-Stitched Custom Clothing Presents...Money For Nothing

Money for Nothing is a 1993 film directed by Ramón Menéndez. It is based on the life of Joey Coyle, an unemployed longshoreman in Philadelphia who, in February 1981, found $1.2 million in the middle of the street after it had fallen out of the back of an armored car. While supplies last, Stitched Custom Clothing, a leading provider of luxury custom clothing individually and specifically for many high-profile clients in the sports and entertainment industries as well as senior management executives is now providing the "fallen out of the back of an armored car" sale for Ermenegildo Zegna Cloths for the holidays.

"We may not be talking millions of 'hard' dollars saved but we will sure make you feel like a millionaire when wearing one of our custom garments. We may not be talking literally about things falling out the back of an armor truck either, but you will feel like you hit the jackpot!" says Marco Polo, SCC's principal designer.

Marco also says, "We realize that many of our clients are trying to do more with less and we feel this is a perfect way to help. If we can leverage our relationships with our fabric mills create a program or have a product that will somehow give you the same, if not better quality and cost our client considerably less to do it, then what we are doing is giving our clients the ability to use their resources in another area where they may not have had the opportunity to do so before."

For a limited time only Stitched Custom Clothing will be offering a reduced priced for all its high-end Ermenegildo Zegna Fabrics for its custom clothing customers. Typically off the rack Zegna suits in a fine men's department store will range anywhere from $2,400.00 and more, SCC will be providing the same fabric, custom tailored to your individual measurements for only $1,595.00. Nearly, $1,000.00 less.

One other unique element to SCC's business model is clients can shop in the comvenience of their office or in the comfort of their homes. SCC has sales reps in major metropolitan areas across the US that will come to your location and take the hassle and anxiety out of finding time to go to department store. Sales reps also carry many other fabrics to assist clients who would like to create a wardrobe for any season.

When you think about Ermenegildo Zegna you must first know that these suits are exclusively produced using the finest raw materials carefully selected on their markets of origin: merino wool in Australia, mohair in South Africa, cashmere in Inner Mongolia and silk in China.

These precious materials are then transformed by the know-how technology and creativity of Ermenegildo Zegna into cloths which reflect the "Italian Style" at its best.

These cloths are designed and molded into finely crafted suitings and sports jackets for the increasingly demanding clientele and the evolution of taste in the field of fashion wear.

We encourage you to explore in more detail, The Stitched Experience...

Resurrecting The Champ-The Return of the Sports Jacket

Bring it on! Sports jackets are making a significant comeback and they are doing it with a new class and powerhouse force.

Never underestimate the infamous saying, “What goes around comes around”.  It was 1988 when Marco Polo of Stitched Custom Clothing wore his last sport coat before this year. There are two major reasons for this resurrection:

First, fashion forward men enjoy showing their creative side by mixing, matching and bringing it all together in a casual and yet sharp flair. The infamous and classic, Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney have regained their popularity as well. In my opinion, they pioneered the suit separates and made them look good.

Secondly, the more suitable reason. Versatility or you may hear the words multi-functional. In this economic climate people want more for their dollar spent and still with plenty of versatility.

Buy a sports jacket and create three distinctive outfits.
  1. Throw it on with a pair of jeans when traveling to a near or distance land. In the morning in New York and in the evening in Florida. When shooting pool with the boys or dinner date with the lady. It still says you can handle business if the need arises.

  2. Throw it on with a pair of slacks and you are now business casual.

  3. Throw it on with a pair of slacks, pocket square and tie and you have created a look that will rival a 2 piece traditional suit any day, any time and any place.
This trend has been and continues to move forward especially with the range of fabrics you can choose from. You see the trends in everyplace you look. Television (Sunday Night Footbal in America), movies (Wall Street), special events and gatherings. You name it and you will see them lurking around.

Don't be the last to get on the train.  Join in on the fun....

Custom Clothing is an Investment in Time and Resources

Time! Where has it gone? Just yesterday it was the turn of the new year. While on the plane to Chicago last week a thought came to me. We are truly in the "Microwave Age". What I mean is, in this fast paced world everything now is rush, stat, expedited or I am in a hurry, " I need this done quickly"! Does anyone cook on the stovetop anymore? Popcorn to me always tasted better cooked on the stove than popped in the microwave.

Ok, maybe I am getting a little caried away. The point that I want to make is having a custom garment, whether a suit, shirt, tie, or shoes is a very different experience from buying off the rack even though it may not be easily seen.

Creating a custom garment is a very personal experience that requires a lot of time. No two people are built or fit the same. Some are athletic, some are portly, some are tall and narrow. There many different shapes and sizes to a man.

The custom process is an investment in a relationship with so many resources. Time being the most precious of them all. From the time to take precise measurements, to the time and patience to handcraft and cut unique patterns, to the time and skill for final stitching, to the time and delivery of the finished garment that has been custom made individually and specifically for you. Some of the finer things in life take time, and they are worth waiting for.

In the convenience and privacy of your office or in the comfort of your home we encourage you to discover in more detail the "Stitched Experience."
